One of the smaller leaps of logic in “Touch” — the new Fox series representing Kiefer Sutherland’s full-time return to television — is that the 11-year-old boy at the center of the story has never spoken and is also the show’s narrator. By writing down numbers, essentially, though at one point he shows an ability to make multiple cellphones ring simultaneously.Spelled out like that, the craziness of the story makes “Touch” sound like a comedy, or a hyperbolic comic-book drama, something like “Heroes,” the cosmic superhero show that ran for four seasons on NBC. “Touch” happens to have been created by Tim Kring, the writer and producer also responsible for “Heroes.” But the earlier show, with its unapologetic pulpiness, was initially a lot of fun. For his new show, Mr. Kring has jettisoned the crude cartoon energy but has kept the New Agey mysticism and quasi-Asian spirituality, while giving free rein to the kind of post-9/11 sentimentality you expect from commercials buy runescape Gold or earnest feature films.
That might not be a bad ratings calculation in our current trying times; sentimental escapism was a dominant theme among this week’s best picture Oscar nominees. And the pilot is a fairly deluxe, good-looking package, even if its wild coincidences and manic globe-hopping — tied to the accidental travels of a lost phone — make it feel like a greeting card version of the film “Babel,” down to the kinky-sex-in-Japan angle.It was directed by one of the show’s executive producers, Francis Lawrence (“I Am Legend,” “Water for Elephants”), continuing the season’s trend of pilot episodes directed by accomplished feature filmmakers like Jonathan Demme, Phillip Noyce, Michael Mann and Gus Van Sant. David Mazouz looks appropriately withdrawn and enigmatic as the child, Jake, in a role that for now doesn’t require much else. Mr. Sutherland is perfectly adequate as Jake’s harried, underemployed single father, who does the heavy lifting of interpreting the numbers his son jots down and acting upon them.The role is in the same range as the brutal but sensitive Jack Bauer that Mr. Sutherland played for eight seasons in “24”: grief, righteous anger and, above all, stifled emotion. Gugu Mbatha-Raw, who was the one shining reason to watch “Undercovers,” doesn’t register very strongly in the pilot as Jake’s social worker; if she’s given more to do, she’ll be a reason to buy runescape accounts watch “Touch.”
